After what seems like an eternity (and with a back-story too long for this weblog) OpenCD 4.0 has been released just in time for Christmas. This time around there’s a bevy of new programs and an simpler, streamlined interface for end users. The full press release is available as is of course various download options.
In related news I’m happy to announce that I’ve been chosen as the new maintainer of the project. What does that mean? Generally, I’ll have the primary role in shaping future versions and the direction of OpenCD and its website.
The main thing I’m sure everybody is anticipating is the future release schedule.
In the past OpenCD has typically been released to coincide with new versions of another Canonical project, linux distribution Ubuntu. That will stay the same; however, there will be additional updates in-between those releases, hopefully whenever a flagship program has a major update or enough of the programs have minor updates. I’m sure everybody will be pleased to know that my initial goal will be to have OpenCD up to date more frequently than it has been at times in the past.
I don’t want to confuse anybody here; Canonical still owns OpenCD; founder and maintainer Henrik Nilsen Omma has taken on a more advisory and consultancy role with the project. Needless to say OpenCD is still in good hands.
